Summer 2024 ROOT Program

(Real Operational Outreach Training) Program

This program is for students who have not yet graduated college and
will have completed at least one full year of college by Summer 2024.

Are you an undergraduate math major (or STEM major) looking to spend a fun summer in New York City while honing your communication and outreach skills and gaining workplace experience?  As a MoMath ROOT participant, you’ll join a dynamic group of other emerging young STEM professionals working to change public perceptions of mathematics at the nation’s premier museum of mathematics.  Students from around the country will be accepted for this highly selective summer opportunity to work at MoMath, where they will:

  • Serve as docents in the Museum
  • Build outreach and communication skills
  • Enhance their mathematical knowledge
  • Meet mathematicians from around the world
  • Gain exposure to a variety of interesting programs, lectures, and people
  • Be part of a motivated and talented cohort

The successful candidate will have:

  • A declared major in mathematics or a closely aligned subject
  • A GPA of 3.5 or higher in STEM subjects (as of January 2024)
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • A desire to share the joy of mathematics with others
  • Prior experience demonstrating a solid work ethic

The ROOT program includes a full-time, paid position in the Museum.  Participants will receive compensation of up to $7,600 for ten weeks of service, free admission to most NYC museums, and discounts at Additions, the shop at MoMath.

Accepted candidates who complete the program successfully will be given top priority for the Museum’s Exponent Fellowship upon graduation.

To apply, please email the following to root@momath.org with a subject line that includes “MoMath ROOT program for [your first and last name]”:

  • A cover letter that explains how you meet the qualifications for the position and includes your available start and end dates
  • A current transcript (unofficial is fine), including grade point average
  • A statement (no more than one page) describing your views on mathematics or a life experience you have had related to mathematics.
  • Two letters of reference, from either college professor(s) or your supervisor(s) from a position you’ve held.  Letters of reference do not need to be received by May 7, but must be received before final acceptance into the program.  Recommenders should send their letters directly to root@momath.org and include your name in the subject line.

Participants must be able to be present in New York City for ten weeks starting at any time in May 2024 and finishing in July or August, and will be responsible for finding their own accommodations.  The ten weeks do not have to be contiguous.  Preference will be given to those who can start earlier and who can work through August 30.

The application deadline is May 7, 2024, but the application window is expected to close prior to that time, when the program fills.  Applications will be accepted and evaluated on a rolling basis.

Note: The Museum welcomes foreign students who are authorized to work in the United States.  This position is ineligible for employer visa sponsorship.
